German Consumer Groups File Class Action Over Amazon Prime Contract Changes
Amazon altered its Prime service in February 2024, adding advertising to Prime Music, removing the song‑download feature and charging an extra €2.99 per month for an ad‑free option. The changes were made without explicit customer consent.
The Verbraucherzentrale Sachsen has opened a class‑action lawsuit. An oral hearing began on 18 May 2026 before the Bavarian Supreme Court, and the registration period for affected users closes on 9 June 2026. The suit seeks compensation of €2.99 for each month since the February 2024 change, roughly €80 per claimant. The consumer centre estimates up to 17 million German Prime members could be eligible, though only about 220 000 have registered so far.
Separate consumer actions are also pending in North Rhine‑Westphalia concerning a 2022 price increase of up to 30 %. Both cases aim to halt the disputed contract modifications and secure refunds for consumers.
