German consumer investigation finds contamination in supermarket mushroom products

An investigation by the NDR consumer magazine ‘Markt’ has revealed significant quality and safety issues in various mushroom products sold in German supermarkets. Testing included frozen porcini mushrooms, porcini pizza, and dried mushroom varieties from both standard supermarkets and organic shops.

The results indicated widespread presence of maggot damage, outdated mushroom parts, and visible worms or larvae. Furthermore, laboratory analysis commissioned by NDR found elevated levels of Bacillus cereus in all tested products, a bacterium that can cause gastrointestinal illnesses. Notably, there are currently no binding limit or warning values for dried mushrooms.

In a separate consumer complaint, a customer reported that Exquisa porcini champignon cream cheese contained negligible amounts of mushrooms, with only 0.7 grams of dried mushrooms and 0.3 grams of porcini powder per 100 grams. The consumer protection agency noted a discrepancy between the prominent mushroom imagery on the packaging and the actual ingredient content.
