German counties deploy helicopters to combat oak processionary moth

The districts of Prignitz and Stendal in Germany have begun aerial operations against the oak processionary moth, a pest whose hairs can cause skin rashes, breathing difficulties and allergic shock. In Prignitz, authorities launched a helicopter‑based spraying campaign to curb the infestation.

In the neighboring district of Stendal, road closures were implemented while a helicopter conducted 13 flights since Monday to treat affected areas from the air. Both districts are using the aerial approach to quickly deliver insecticide over large forested zones where the moth nests.

The effort aims to reduce health risks for residents and prevent further spread of the moth, which has become a recurring problem in parts of northern Germany.
