German court allows extremist classification of Jewish Voice association

The Higher Administrative Court of Berlin-Brandenburg has ruled that the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) is permitted to classify the association ‘Jüdische Stimme für gerechten Frieden in Nahost’ (Jewish Voice for Just Peace in the Middle East) as ‘assuredly extremist’ in its 2024 report.

The decision overturns an earlier ruling from an April administrative court proceeding in Berlin, which had found insufficient evidence for such a classification. The Federal Ministry of the Interior filed a successful appeal against that initial decision. The court stated that the association shows tendencies that endanger Germany's foreign interests through the application or preparation of violence and are directed against the peaceful coexistence of peoples.

Representatives of the association have criticized the ruling, noting that the decision was reached during Yom Kippur. They argue the classification constitutes criminalization of a group that opposes war and genocide. While the Berlin court previously noted a lack of explicit calls for violence or clear sympathy for Hamas, the current ruling allows the designation to stand in the upcoming report.
