German Court Declares Luxembourg Border Checks Illegal, Reinforcing Schengen Freedom

The Administrative Court in Koblenz ruled that the person checks conducted at the German‑Luxembourg border were unlawful, finding they violated EU law and the Schengen agreement.

Europa‑Union Deutschland and its Saarland branch praised the decision, stating it confirms that unilateral national border controls are not a viable response to shared European challenges. Landesvorsitzender Julien François Simons said the ruling is “good news for Europe, for Saarland and for all people living in border regions,” stressing the importance of open borders for commuters, families, business and culture. Secretary General Christian Moos added that the judgment underlines Schengen as a legally protected core of European integration, sending a clear signal that any restriction of free movement must meet legal proportionality.
