German Court Holds Google Liable for AI-Generated Search Errors

A regional court in Munich ruled that Google can be held directly responsible for false statements produced by its AI‑generated “AI Overview” search summaries. The court rejected Google’s claim that the AI‑generated text is merely a link to third‑party content, determining that the summaries constitute independent content for which the search engine operator is liable. The judgment stemmed from lawsuits by two Munich publishing houses that were incorrectly linked by the AI to scams and dubious business practices. The court ordered Google to cease publishing the inaccurate AI statements and to cover 80 % of the legal costs. A Google spokesperson said, “We are investing heavily in the quality of the AI Overview function to ensure the vast majority of answers provide correct information.” Google has announced it will appeal the decision.
