German Court Holds Google Liable for AI-Generated Search Summaries

A Munich district court ruled that Google is directly responsible for inaccurate answers produced by its AI Overview feature, which generated false links between two local publishing houses and alleged fraudulent or subscription‑trap business practices. The court determined that AI Overview creates new, autonomous content rather than merely displaying traditional search results, and therefore does not qualify for the legal protections afforded to standard search engines.

The ruling includes a temporary injunction ordering Google to cease dissemination of the false statements and to bear 80 % of the legal costs. Google has denied liability, citing user‑verification of sources and the expectation that users treat AI‑generated information cautiously, and said it will appeal the decision.

The case, brought by the two Munich publishers, could set a precedent for how technology firms are held accountable for AI‑generated content in the European Union.
