German Court Holds Google Liable for Faulty AI Overview Claims

The regional court in Munich, Germany, found Google directly responsible for false statements generated by its AI Overview feature, which wrongly associated two German publishing companies with fraudulent or unethical commercial practices.

The judges ordered Google to remove the erroneous AI-generated answers worldwide and barred the company from repeating such claims, emphasizing that AI Overview creates its own summarised assertions rather than merely linking to source pages. Google’s argument that the feature includes a disclaimer and that users rarely click links was rejected, with the court highlighting the reputational and commercial damage to the publishers.

The ruling does not require a complete shutdown of AI Overviews, but it mandates stricter monitoring to prevent similar defamatory outputs. Google may choose to appeal the decision.
