Germany sentences two men for Iranian-directed terror plots

The Higher Regional Court in Hamburg has sentenced two men to prison for conducting intelligence activities on behalf of Iran and planning attacks against Jewish and pro-Israel targets in Germany.

Ali S., a 54-year-old Danish citizen of Afghan origin, was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison. The court found that he received direct instructions from officers of the Al-Quds Brigades, the foreign intelligence unit of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. Ali S. was convicted of espionage, attempted murder, and attempted arson.

His accomplice, 43-year-old Tawab M., received a sentence of four and a half years for his involvement in the attempted murder plot. The two men, who were residing in Denmark at the time, had scouted several high-profile targets, including Josef Schuster, President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, and Volker Beck, President of the German-Israeli Society.

Additionally, the court established that Ali S. had prepared for an arson attack against a kosher food business in Berlin. Presiding Judge Petra Wende-Spors stated that Iran had attempted to “export its terror to Germany” through these state-directed terrorist activities.
