German Court Reviews Life Sentence of Magdeburg Christmas Market Attacker

A 51‑year‑old Saudi national who worked as a psychiatrist in a forensic institution drove a 340‑hp rental car through a barrier at the Magdeburg Christmas market on 20 December 2024, killing five women and a nine‑year‑old boy and injuring hundreds. The Landgericht Magdeburg convicted him of six counts of murder and over 200 counts of attempted murder, imposing a life sentence with the special severity of guilt, effectively ruling out parole after 15 years. The defendant has filed an appeal, and the case is now before the Bundesgerichtshof, which will examine possible legal errors in the trial judgment.

The court noted the defendant’s lack of empathy during the attack and confirmed a diagnosis of narcissistic personality disorder, but found no doubts about his criminal responsibility.
