German courts expand Bürgergeld rights by overturning sanctions and permitting benefits despite large savings

Two German social courts have issued rulings that broaden the scope of the nation’s basic income support, known as Bürgergeld. One judgment declared multiple sanctions imposed on a sick recipient to be invalid, reinforcing legal protection that is expected to apply under the new Grundsicherung framework.

In a separate case, a court ordered the Jobcenter to continue paying Bürgergeld to a family that holds a six‑figure bank balance, demonstrating that substantial savings do not automatically disqualify applicants. Both decisions set precedents that could affect many current and future recipients of the welfare benefit.
