German courts order Tipico and bet365 to repay betting losses

German courts have issued rulings requiring major online sports betting providers to reimburse players for significant losses due to licensing and regulatory violations.

The Münster Regional Court ordered Tipico Co Ltd to repay approximately 830,000 Euro to a client. The ruling covers losses incurred while the company lacked a required German permit, as well as losses occurring after the license was granted, during which the court found Tipico violated statutory deposit and stake limits.

Separately, the Munich I Regional Court ruled that Hillside (Sports) LP, acting for bet365, must reimburse a player approximately 80,500 Euro. The court determined that the contracts were void because the provider did not hold the necessary license to offer online sports betting in Germany during the period between 2014 and 2016.
