German Craft Apprenticeship Growth Strengthens Jobs

Apprenticeship enrolments in Germany’s craft sectors are rising. In the bakery trade, the number of new apprentices for baker and bakery specialist roles increased by more than 10% last year, according to Nils Vogt of the Central Association of German Bakers. First‑year apprentices now earn about €1,070, and the sector reports strong demand for high‑quality, regional baked goods, which it says secures jobs even during economic fluctuations.

In the Saarland, the Handwerkskammer recorded an 8% rise in newly signed apprenticeship contracts compared with the previous year, bringing the total to 1,678 new contracts and 4,292 apprentices across more than 70 trades. The chamber highlighted continued interest from school leavers, especially in electric, automotive and HVAC occupations, and emphasized the resilience of craft training amidst demographic challenges.

Both organisations stress that vocational training remains a stable career path, combining traditional skills with modern technologies and offering diverse progression opportunities, from master certification to self‑employment.
