German craft businesses face shifting demand and digital competition

German craft businesses are facing a shifting economic landscape where traditional reliance on word-of-mouth and local reputation is becoming less reliable. While many owner-operated firms have historically grown through recommendations and long-standing customer bases, increasing economic uncertainty and the rise of digital competition are changing how customers find services via Google and AI systems.

According to the KfW 2026 business survey, nearly half of the surveyed craft businesses reported declining demand, while only about one-fifth reported growth. This trend suggests that relying on automatic customer influx is becoming riskier. Furthermore, as many owners approach retirement, establishing a professional digital presence is becoming critical for business succession, as it can make a company more attractive and independent of its original owner.
