German cultural events explore era of reunification and social change

Cultural events in Germany are exploring the transformative era of the late GDR and the early 1990s through different mediums.

In Berlin, the musical ‘Wir sind am Leben – Das Berlin Musical’ by Peter Plate and Ulf Leo Sommer is playing at the Theater des Westens. The production aims to capture the energy of the 1990s post-reunification era, featuring music from the band Rosenstolz. While the show is noted for its high energy and colorful stage presence, some critiques suggest it relies on certain clichés regarding the queer subculture and social landscape of that period.

Simultaneously, the Museum Utopie und Alltag is hosting a photographic lecture and discussion by Gerd Markert. As part of the exhibition ‘Das Weite suchen’ (Seeking the Distance), the event focuses on photographs from East Brandenburg taken between 1983 and 1995. The exhibition, curated by Anja Tack and Isabel Enzenbach, examines themes of youth, work, living spaces, and social change to provide perspective on the societal shifts during the German reunification process.
