German cultural exhibitions to feature Ernst Schroeder art and Holocaust history

Two upcoming cultural exhibitions in Germany focus on historical art and the legacy of the Holocaust.

Galerie Pankow will host an exhibition of works by Ernst Schroeder from April 9 to June 7, 2025. Schroeder, a member of the ‘Berlin School’ of painters in the 1950s, was known for his depictions of the Baltic coast, maritime themes, and urban landscapes. His work is characterized by a high painterly standard applied to everyday subjects.

A separate cabinet exhibition, running from September 26, 2026, to February 28, 2027, will examine the deportations to Riga and the Holocaust in German-occupied Latvia. The exhibition details how the Reichssicherheitshauptamt deported approximately 25,000 Jewish people from German cities and Vienna to Riga between 1941 and 1942, noting that only about 1,080 survivors emerged from these transports. Realized by the Stiftung Hamburger Gedenkstätten with support from the Federal Foreign Office, the presentation also covers post-war history and the process of addressing Nazi crimes in both Latvia and Germany.
