German cultural projects explore queer history in the former DDR
Cultural projects in Germany are exploring the history of queer life and art during the era of the German Democratic Republic (DDR).
In Leipzig, an exhibition at the University of Leipzig features works by artist Jürgen Wittdorf. Originally commissioned in 1963 for the German College for Physical Culture, Wittdorf’s woodcuts and linocuts depicting athletes are being re-examined through a queer lens. The works, which include themes of youth and sport, are noted for their depictions of physicality and community that can be interpreted erotically.
Additionally, the production ‘Sterne steigen auf’ by the group Die Soziale Fiktion offers a documentary theater and drag performance. Based on research from private archives and state records, the show explores the experiences of gay and lesbian individuals in East Germany. The production is scheduled to perform in Jena and Gera in late October 2026.
