German customs officials arrest fraud suspect after highway inspection

A 24-year-old man was arrested in Hessen, Germany, after customs officials intercepted him during a routine inspection on the A44 motorway. The suspect was allegedly involved in a “shock call” scam targeting an elderly woman from Höxter.

The fraudster reportedly contacted the woman claiming her daughter had been involved in a fatal accident and was in custody. He instructed her to provide valuables to cover bail costs. The woman subsequently handed over jewelry, watches, and gold coins valued at approximately 50,000 euros.

During the stop near the Bärenberg rest area, customs officers noted the suspect could not explain the origin of the items and provided contradictory statements. A purchase receipt found among the coins identified the woman from Höxter as the buyer, leading to the suspect's arrest. He was handed over to the Kassel police, and the valuables were returned to the victim.
