German dairy farmers face economic and regulatory challenges

Dairy farmers in Germany are facing significant pressure due to proposed animal welfare legislation and shifting market dynamics. In Bavaria, the Bavarian Farmers' Association (BBV) has organized protests against a planned animal welfare law that could ban the tethering of livestock. Officials warn that such a ban would disproportionately affect small-scale farms, potentially forcing more than 13,000 smallholders in Bavaria to abandon dairy farming because converting or rebuilding stables is often financially unfeasible.

In Saxony, regional milk producers are navigating uncertainty regarding the planned takeover of Vogtlandmilch by the Theo Müller Group, scheduled for early 2027. While the acquisition includes plans to expand the Plauen facility, some cooperative members are seeking alternative buyers to mitigate risks. These economic concerns are compounded by a sharp decline in milk prices—dropping from 50 cents to 38 cents per kilogram—and rising operational costs, particularly regarding diesel fuel and agricultural inputs.
