DAX hits record as Hormuz deal lifts oil prices and US markets slip

The German DAX rose about 0.2 % to 26,178 points, keeping the index above the 26,000‑point record despite Germany’s economy growing only 0.2 % between April and June and inflation edging up to roughly 2.8 %. Around 80 % of DAX‑listed companies generate revenue abroad, reducing the index’s sensitivity to domestic conditions.

In the United States, major equity indices fell on Thursday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.85 % to 53,885 points, the S&P 500 slipped 0.18 % to about 7,710 points, and the Nasdaq 100 lost 0.39 % to 29,373 points. Tech stocks were pressured after Lisa Cook of the Federal Reserve signaled a willingness to raise policy rates if inflation does not ease.

Oil markets reacted to diplomatic talks in the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude rose roughly 1.4 % to $80.55 per barrel after reports that Iran and Oman are close to an agreement on two two‑way shipping routes through the strait. Iran stressed the deal would not fully reopen the waterway and could give Tehran control over vessel traffic and potential passage fees of 5‑7 % of cargo value, with Oman discussing a fee near 3 %. The news lifted oil prices and contributed to the broader market moves.
