Germany's defence procurement drives Rheinmetall UK contract and new A400M orders

German defence firms are benefiting from expanded government spending. Rheinmetall secured a contract worth almost €1 billion with the United Kingdom to provide digital training, simulation and networked training solutions for the British Army, a deal that will run for about 15 years. At the same time, the Bundeswehr is in talks to acquire 15‑20 new Airbus A400M military transport aircraft, with €3.59 billion of budget authority approved for the purchase. The new aircraft would replace older airframes and could be adapted to carry drones or cruise missiles, reinforcing Germany’s role as the largest A400M operator in Europe.

The heightened procurement activity is also stimulating the defence industry in Germany’s southwest. Companies such as Litef, a specialist in inertial navigation, and Heckler & Koch, which expects a €800 million order for new small‑arms, report strong demand and hiring. The sector’s growth is linked to broader German and EU commitments to increase military spending and close capability gaps over the next decade.
