German dentists increasingly favor acquiring existing practices

A recent analysis of the German dental market reveals that dentists are increasingly choosing to acquire existing practices rather than establishing new ones. In 2025, 65% of dentists starting their own independent practices opted for acquisitions.

According to a report by the Institut der Deutschen Zahnärzte (IDZ) and apoBank, the average investment for acquiring an individual practice rose to 518,000 euros in 2025, a 15% increase from the previous year. This marks the first time the average investment has exceeded the half-million-euro threshold.

These costs are split between the purchase price of the practice, which averaged 255,000 euros, and additional expenditures for modernization and equipment, averaging 263,000 euros. The rising costs are attributed not only to higher purchase prices but also to increased spending on renovations, medical equipment, IT solutions, and infrastructure development.
