German dioceses address sexual abuse through reports and art
A scientific investigation into the Diocese of Trier has released its fourth interim report, detailing systemic cover-ups and secrecy regarding sexual abuse by clergy. The report focuses on the tenures of Bishops Franz Rudolf Bornewasser (1946–1951) and Matthias Wehr (1951–1966). Researchers identified 335 victims and 123 accused individuals during this period, noting that many perpetrators were granted leniency or simply transferred by superiors.
Expanding the scope of the entire investigation from 1946 to 2021, the total number of identified victims has reached 782, with 252 accused individuals. The findings highlight that during the Bornewasser era, 50 percent of victims were girls, whereas during the Wehr era, approximately two-thirds were boys.
In a separate response to the ongoing crisis, the Diocese of Fulda has introduced a public art installation titled ‘Schmerzpunkt’ by artist Susanne Wagner. The work, featuring a red dot with a cross-shaped void, serves as a visible memorial to victims of sexualized violence and the abuse of spiritual authority. Church officials and victim advocates emphasized that while the symbol is important, meaningful change requires addressing systemic causes and improving the concrete treatment of survivors.
