German districts impose water extraction bans amid drought

In the Aschaffenburg district of Bavaria, authorities have issued an order prohibiting residents from drawing water from streams and rivers until the end of August 2026, with the Main River excluded. Violations may be fined up to €50,000.

In the neighboring Borken district of North Rhine‑Westphalia, a further restriction was announced on 22 July 2026, extending the ban to the Ahauser Aa, Berkel, Dinkel, Schlinge and other surface waters in the Lippe catch‑area. The ban, which also applies to private garden watering, lasts until 31 October 2026 and carries the same maximum fine.

Both measures respond to persistently low water levels across Germany, threatening the ecosystems that depend on these waterways. "Bei Verstößen drohen Bußgelder bis zu 50.000 Euro," officials warned.
