German districts tighten animal disease controls amid swine fever and horse anemia outbreaks
The Landkreis Uckermark in Brandenburg has expanded a protection zone along the Polish border after African swine fever (ASF) was confirmed in a wild boar on 30 July and suspected in five additional wild boars. The expanded zone imposes a farming ban, a hunting ban, and strict access controls, including fenced perimeters, leashed dogs, and closed gates. Violations can attract fines of up to €30,000.
In Northeim, Lower Saxony, a horse was diagnosed with Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) at the end of July. Authorities established a 1 km radius restriction zone around the affected farm. All horses, donkeys, mules and hinnies within the zone must be kept in stables, and any movement requires a special permit. Infected animals are to be culled, vaccination is prohibited, and the virus is deemed harmless to humans.
