German doctor Dietrich Grönemeyer links better sleep to lower dementia risk
German radiologist and author Prof. Dietrich Grönemeyer has published a new book on sleep, arguing that adequate, high‑quality sleep can markedly lower the risk of developing dementia. He cites recent research showing that during sleep the brain’s glymphatic system actively clears amyloid‑beta and tau proteins, substances that accumulate in Alzheimer’s disease. Grönemeyer states, “Good sleep reduces dementia risk.”
Surveys indicate that about one‑third of Germans regularly experience poor sleep, with roughly six million diagnosed with sleep disorders. The book emphasizes that sleep quality, beginning with morning habits, strengthens the immune system and supports brain health. Grönemeyer urges the public to adopt better sleep practices to reduce their dementia risk.
