German downsizing trend sees families move from houses to apartments

A growing social‑media trend in Germany shows younger people—particularly women—posting on Instagram about moving from their houses back into apartments. They cite heavy maintenance responsibilities, garden upkeep, heating costs, property taxes and a desire for more free time, travel and a lighter lifestyle as reasons for the move.

At the same time, architect Leo Garcia is developing a new housing concept called “tetrisOASIS” near Landsberg, Germany. The project proposes flexible, small‑scale dwellings that can be reconfigured for singles, retirees or people who combine living and working. Garcia argues that many homes were built for earlier life stages and that adaptable units can reduce the burden of large, under‑used houses, mirroring the motivations behind the Instagram‑driven downsizing trend.
