German drivers confront costly pothole damage as ADAC launches free vehicle inspections
Winter weather this season has caused extensive pothole formation on German roads, with the ADAC estimating damages amounting to billions of euros nationwide. The club notes that temperature fluctuations around the freezing point allow water to infiltrate cracks, freeze, expand and create holes that can cost up to €200 each to repair. In Karlsruhe, about 15 % of streets are classified as severely damaged, and the city plans to repave roughly 200 km of asphalt in the coming years, budgeting around €1 million for 2026.
Separately, the ADAC set up a mobile inspection station in Mülheim from 4 – 7 August, offering drivers free checks of brakes, shock absorbers and exterior lighting. The service is open to both members and non‑members, while additional paid checks – such as climate‑control system inspections – are also available.
Many modern cars also display a “Please check rear seats” reminder. The message is triggered when a rear door has been opened or sensors detect weight, urging drivers to look for children, pets or objects that could be left behind, a risk that is especially acute in hot summer conditions.
