German driving rules detail braking distances and test procedures for traffic jams

The ADAC explains how to calculate a vehicle’s stopping distance, separating the reaction distance, braking distance and total stopping distance. The braking distance follows the formula (speed ÷ 10)² × 1 for normal braking and is halved for emergency braking. The reaction distance is derived from the speed ÷ 10 multiplied by 3, reflecting a typical reaction time of 0.8‑1.2 seconds. Adding both gives the total stopping distance.

German driving‑test regulations set a minimum of 30 minutes of actual driving time within a 55‑minute exam. Time spent in traffic jams does not count toward the required driving time; examiners extend the test on alternative routes until the mandatory driving minutes are met. While a test can be halted and retaken if congestion makes it impossible to complete the required tasks, such interruptions are rare according to veteran driving instructors.
