German Economy Minister Reiche Pushes EU Red Line on Russian Gas During Turkey Visit
German Economy Minister Katherina Reiche arrived in Ankara for a two‑day visit, meeting Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar and Trade Minister Ömer Bolat. The talks focused on deepening German‑Turkish economic ties and expanding energy cooperation, especially diversifying natural‑gas supplies.
Reiche said the European Union will not allow Russian‑origin gas in any future energy agreements that involve Turkey, stating that “Turkey understands the EU’s red line.” Ankara is negotiating extensions of its contracts with Gazprom as its existing deals near expiry, while also positioning itself as a regional gas hub.
The German delegation highlighted opportunities for German companies in Turkey’s investment boom and underscored the strategic importance of Turkey’s location for Eurasian energy routes. Both sides stressed the need for reliable supply amid geopolitical tensions such as the Ukraine war and Middle‑East disruptions.
