German ELEKTRO+ Study Finds Integrated Home Energy Systems Slash Energy Use by Up to 92%

The ELEKTRO+ initiative explains how linking a photovoltaic system, battery storage, wallbox and heat pump creates a smart home energy system. A study by the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (ISI) commissioned by the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association (ZVEI) examined a typical 132‑m² single‑family house.

The analysis shows that a fully electrified, intelligently networked future home can cut its final energy demand by as much as 92 % compared with a conventional building and lower annual energy costs by roughly €2,360. Without coordinated control, self‑consumption of solar electricity averages 36 %; with a battery, an electric vehicle and smart energy‑management it rises to 68 % – a gain of 32 percentage points. Torsten Hoffmann, expert for ELEKTRO+, said, "The study shows clearly what is technically and economically possible when all devices communicate and cooperate."
