German Employees Lose Up to 20% of Salary in Missed Company Pension Contributions
Since 2019 German employers must contribute a minimum of 15 % of an employee’s salary when the employee opts for a company pension (bAV) and the employer saves social‑security contributions. Many workers do not use the entitlement, forgoing the matching contribution that can reach 20 % of their own savings – a loss that compounds over decades.
In practice the employer match is often set between 20 % and 25 % of the employee’s contribution, exceeding the legal floor. The Deutsche Rentenversicherung reports about 57 million insured persons and roughly 26 million retirees, with around 90 % of the German workforce compulsory members of the statutory pension system. Since 2022 new salary conversions must receive at least a 15 % employer match. Contributions below €169.75 per month are exempt from statutory health and long‑term care insurance premiums, and the Digital Retirement Overview lets citizens view entitlements from all three pension pillars online.
