German endocrinologist Prof. Norbert Stefan on weight‑cycling risks and GLP‑1 drugs

German endocrinologist Prof. Norbert Stefan explains that the health concerns surrounding weight‑cycling, or Jo‑Jo dieting, may be overstated. While dramatic weight fluctuations have been linked to loss of muscle mass, reduced metabolism and higher risks of type‑2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, Stefan notes that stabilising a lower weight can be difficult and that rapid weight loss is now easier with GLP‑1 medications such as Wegovy and Mounjaro.

He warns that after stopping these drugs, patients tend to regain weight up to four times faster than after ending a conventional diet and exercise programme. The rapid regain raises fears of re‑entering the Jo‑Jo cycle, but Stefan also suggests the effect can sometimes be useful during weight loss. The discussion is illustrated with examples from the Netflix documentary “Fit For TV: The Biggest Loser”, where former winners regained weight after the show.
