German energy lobby BDEW calls for faster grid expansion and hydrogen market boost

The Bundesverband der Deutschen Energie‑ und Wasserwirtschaft (BDEW) criticised the German federal government for the sluggish pace of electricity grid expansion. In a position paper, the lobby group, led by chairwoman Kerstin Andreae, demanded accelerated planning and permitting, including shortened environmental assessments, and urged the coalition to make full use of the Infrastructure Future Act’s €500 billion special fund to speed up line construction.

In a separate briefing, the BDEW presented its first hydrogen monitor, revealing that out of a planned 12 000 MW of hydrogen production capacity, only 44 projects (181 MW) are operating. The association called for a clear hydrogen law providing legal certainty, targeted incentives, and supply‑side contracts, as well as greater EU cooperation, positioning Germany as a leader in a European hydrogen alliance.

Both documents stress that faster grid development and a robust hydrogen policy are essential for Germany’s industrial competitiveness and the broader energy transition.
