German environmentalists warn against deepening river channels

Environmental organizations in Germany, including the Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland (BUND) and the Landesbund für Vogel- und Naturschutz (LBV), are warning against the deepening of river channels to combat low water levels.

As transport ministers discuss measures to maintain navigability during droughts, conservationists argue that deepening shipping lanes only treats the symptoms of the climate crisis rather than the cause. They warn that concentrating currents into narrower, deeper channels can trigger bed erosion, lower groundwater levels, and disconnect rivers from their floodplains, negatively impacting agriculture and forestry.

Ecologically, low water levels combined with high temperatures lead to decreased oxygen, increased pollutant concentrations, and harmful algal blooms. These conditions threaten fish populations by destroying spawning grounds and migratory paths. Experts suggest that instead of costly infrastructure projects, efforts should focus on strengthening river resilience and adapting shipping to changing water conditions.
