Lufthansa lowers profit outlook as fuel costs rise

Lufthansa Group has lowered its adjusted operating profit (EBIT) forecast for 2026 to a range of €1.7 billion to €2.0 billion, down from a previous target of up to €2.2 billion. This adjustment follows a third-quarter performance where the group achieved record revenues of €12.2 billion, a 9% increase year-on-year, and an adjusted EBIT of €1.4 billion.

The downward revision is primarily driven by soaring jet fuel expenses, which are projected to reach €9.3 billion for the full year 2026. This represents a €2 billion increase compared to the previous year, fueled by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the conflict involving Iran. Finance Chief Till Streichert warned that ticket prices are expected to rise by double digits next year to offset these kerosene costs.

While the group's logistics and maintenance divisions, including Lufthansa Technik and Lufthansa Cargo, showed strong growth, the core Lufthansa Airlines brand continues to face profitability challenges. The airline is also navigating supply chain delays for new long-haul aircraft from Boeing and Airbus.
