German experts caution against forcing children into sports
Sports and movement educators in Germany argue that compelling children to participate in organised sport violates their rights under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Alfred Richartz, emeritus professor of sport and movement pedagogy, states that "forcing children into sport would clearly breach their rights and be illegal" and stresses that children have a higher participation claim for leisure activities than for medical treatments.
Child‑development specialists also warn of the growing pressure on youngsters to excel in multiple extracurricular activities. Education scholar Margrit Stamm describes the emergence of "burn‑out kids" who face relentless performance expectations, linking this trend to over‑promotion and reduced free play. Both experts advise parents to act as advocates for their children, supporting voluntary involvement and ensuring a balanced approach that respects the child's own wishes and wellbeing.
