German farmers demand aid amid livestock and regulatory challenges
German pig farmers and organic producers are facing significant structural and economic pressures. During a German Farmers' Association (DBV) event in Bavaria, approximately 500 farmers gathered to express urgent concerns regarding the industry's viability. Producers reported severe liquidity issues, with some selling land to remain operational.
Demands directed at Federal Minister for Agriculture Alois Rainer include rapid government assistance, reduced bureaucracy, lower energy costs, and the extension of deadlines for structural transitions, such as those regarding farrowing crates.
In a separate regulatory development, the EU Commission has acknowledged the need for flexibility regarding grazing requirements in organic farming. Following negotiations involving Minister Rainer, authorities will have more discretion to consider regional circumstances and structural limitations that prevent organic farms from providing immediate access to pasture for livestock.
