European Online Retailers Face Delivery Delays and Packaging Gaps, Study Finds
A mystery‑shopping study by the returns‑management firm Shopreturns examined a sample of German online fashion shops. Only about half of the stores met their promised delivery windows; the longest actual delivery took eight days against a five‑day promise. Roughly 50% of parcels arrived without protective packing material, and most shipments were handled by a single national courier. Tracking information was available in 95% of cases, while delivery costs ranging from €1.49 to €9.90 showed no correlation with packing quality.
Polish online bookstore Poltax details its own order‑fulfilment timelines. Product‑specific processing times vary from 24 hours to several weeks, especially for hard‑to‑source items. Domestic parcels are typically delivered within one to two business days by couriers such as DHL Parcel, DPD, InPost or Poczta Polska. International shipments to European destinations take three to seven days, and deliveries outside Europe may require two to six weeks. Payment method choice also influences dispatch speed, with online payments encouraging faster handling.
Both reports highlight the importance of accurate delivery estimates, reliable packaging, and transparent communication for European e‑commerce operators.
