German FDP and SPD reshuffle leadership after poor state election results

After the recent state elections, the Free Democratic Party (FDP) in Rhineland‑Palatinate announced a renewal of its leadership. General Secretary Nicole Büttner said the party was dissatisfied with the vote and would elect a new party board and state chair at its congress on May 9. Outgoing chair Daniela Schmitt resigned and will not seek the position again, with the party pledging a stronger liberal agenda focused on individual opportunity and reduced regulation.

In Baden‑Württemberg, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) faced a historic defeat and is in crisis. Around 30,000 party members will vote on a new state chair. A joint ticket of Bundestag members Isabel Cademartori and former MP Robin Mesarosch is competing with Landtag member Dorothea Kliche‑Behnke and local politician Carsten Lotz. The candidates propose a tighter communication strategy, a talent‑database for members, and a focus on labour issues and the impact of artificial intelligence to revive the party’s appeal.
