FDP membership climbs after Wolfgang Kubicki becomes party chair
The Free Democratic Party (FDP) reported a net gain of about 700 members following its May 30‑31 party congress. 780 new members joined the party while 80 left, lifting the total membership back above the 70,000 mark that had slipped after the end of the coalition government.
New party chair Wolfgang Kubicki, elected at the congress, attributed the rise to a “back‑wind” generated by the fresh leadership team, a view echoed by FDP secretary‑general Martin Hagen. Kubicki has repeatedly denied rumours of a right‑ward shift, stating there is no evidence of an AfD‑aligned “brand‑mauer” and rejecting any cooperation with the far‑right party.
On the ARD talk show “Maischberger”, Kubicki criticised Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s communication style and defended the FDP’s stance against the AfD, while acknowledging the need for clear language and pragmatic solutions. Political analysts note that polling numbers remain roughly stable, and the membership surge may reflect heightened attention rather than a lasting electoral swing.
