Japan earthquake kills at least 13 on Kyushu island

A magnitude‑7.1 earthquake struck the south‑west Japanese island of Kyushu on Tuesday afternoon, killing 13 people and injuring dozens. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi confirmed the death toll, while officials warned that the actual number of fatalities could be higher. The quake caused severe damage to buildings and roads, and an explosion—believed to be caused by a gas leak—triggered further casualties in a shopping centre and a paper mill. Rescue teams continue searching for missing persons, and the national weather agency has warned of possible aftershocks in the coming days.
