German film Die Sünderin to be broadcast on ARTE
The 1951 German drama Die Sünderin, starring Hildegard Knef and Gustav Fröhlich, is scheduled for broadcast on ARTE. Directed by Willi Forst, the film follows Marina, a woman who enters prostitution after her family life collapses, and her subsequent relationship with a painter named Alexander.
Upon its release in the early 1950s, the film caused significant scandal in West Germany. The Church and various public groups protested its depictions of prostitution, suicide, and unconventional relationships, leading to boycott calls and death threats against Knef. Despite the controversy, the film drew two million viewers in its first three weeks, though it did not achieve long-term financial success.
