German Film Festival to feature live score for Metropolis

The 25th edition of the German Film Festival, held in Mexico City from September 24 to October 3, will feature a special live musical performance of Fritz Lang’s science fiction classic, ‘Metropolis’.

The inaugural screening at the Teatro de la Ciudad Esperanza Iris will feature a new score performed live by the musical group 2Contrabajos—composed of Quique Rangel (of Café Tacvba) and Mike Sandoval—alongside vocalist Denise Gutiérrez (of Hello Seahorse!).

Rather than recreating historical accompaniments, the musicians aim to create an original dialogue with the film’s scenes, colors, and rhythms. The project emphasizes improvisation and the unique creative expression of the three artists, marking a modern musical response to the nearly century-old cinematic masterpiece.
