German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil proposes overhaul of cryptocurrency tax rules
Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD) is planning to amend Germany's tax treatment of digital assets. The proposal would eliminate the current one‑year holding period that makes crypto gains tax‑free after twelve months and instead subject profits to the same flat withholding tax applied to stocks – 25 % plus solidarity surcharge and church tax. Details such as transition arrangements and coalition support remain unclear, and the governing parties have pledged not to raise taxes.
Around 12.8 % of German adults – roughly 8.9 million people – currently hold cryptocurrencies. The change could affect a sizable portion of private investors. At the same time, Bitcoin is trading near $64,700, with some analysts citing bullish signals and others warning of further corrections. Market participants are watching both the regulatory shift and price movements closely.
The tax reform debate highlights the growing relevance of crypto assets in Germany's financial landscape and may influence investor behaviour ahead of upcoming elections and broader European policy discussions.
