German Fire Service Association Sets Berlin Congress on Population Protection

The German Fire Service Association (Deutscher Feuerwehrverband, DFV) announced that its 14th Bundesfachkongress will take place on 16 October 2026 in Berlin. The conference, titled “Population Protection – Military and Civil Defence Overview,” will examine the “Pakt für den Bevölkerungsschutz” and discuss civil‑military collaboration in a fragile geopolitical context.

DFV President Karl‑Heinz Banse highlighted the relevance of the pact and the need to align expectations for both military and civilian defence. Speakers include Grit Tüngler, President of the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance; Stefan Hermann, commander of the Reutlingen fire service, who will present a case study on a three‑day power outage; Mathias Bessel, head of the DFV civil‑military cooperation working group; and Dr. Matthias Münch of the Berlin fire service discussing infrastructure issues.

The congress coincides with the 175th anniversary of the Berlin fire department. The following day, 17 October, the DFV’s Delegates Assembly will convene in the Red Town Hall to consider the conference’s findings and their impact on fire services nationwide.
