German Firms Boost AI Use as Remote Work Stalls Entry‑Level Careers

A May 2026 survey by the Munich ifo Institute finds that 54.5 % of German companies now use artificial intelligence, up from 40.9 % a year earlier. Adoption is strongest in industry (58.7 %) and services (56.2 %). Larger firms are most active, with 67.2 % employing AI regularly. A separate study by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, analysing a Fortune‑500 technology firm, shows that remote‑work positions dramatically reduce hiring of recent graduates. The research notes that software developers received about 20 % more feedback when working near colleagues, and that after the shift to remote work the firm hired older, experienced staff instead of entry‑level talent. The authors estimate that remote work may account for two‑thirds of the rise in youth unemployment during the period. Both reports highlight that while AI promises efficiency gains, German workers report lower satisfaction (51 % positive) compared with the global average (57 %).
