German firms brace for quantum‑computing “Q‑Day” risk to encryption
German companies are warned that the rise of quantum computers could undermine today’s encryption methods, a scenario dubbed “Q‑Day”. Quantum algorithms are expected to solve problems such as large‑number factorisation, which underpins RSA and other asymmetric cryptographic systems, potentially rendering them obsolete.
A Bitkom study “Quantencomputing in der deutschen Wirtschaft 2026” finds that 67 % of firms with over 100 employees view quantum computing as a business opportunity, while 44 % see a high risk to IT security. Only eight percent have already taken concrete steps, and two‑thirds plan no further training, raising concerns about a looming knowledge gap that could leave many organisations unprepared for the emerging threat.
