German firms' cloud dependence risks laid bare by Bitkom study

A Bitkom survey of 603 German companies with at least 20 employees shows that 46 % would have to suspend business operations if their cloud services failed, and 9 % would be forced to stop immediately. On average, firms estimate they could keep working for about 78 hours after an outage, while 28 % reported experiencing a major cloud disruption in the past year.

The report also highlights existing safeguards: 82 % have emergency and restart plans, three‑quarters back up critical data outside the cloud, and 69 % actively monitor their services. However, only 35 % maintain technical redundancy and a mere 8 % use a secondary cloud provider, underscoring the vulnerability of German businesses to cloud failures.
