German firms examine automation limits in intralogistics
Intralogistics – the internal flow of materials, goods and information within a company – is a key driver of efficiency for modern manufacturers. Automation, digitalisation and Lean Management are being deployed to cut costs, boost productivity, improve quality and ensure on‑time delivery. Companies such as Arvato, Autostore, Blue Yonder, Exotec, Knapp and Manhattan Associates stress that while automation will be the norm in warehouses by 2026, it must be applied where it adds real value.
Experts argue that fully robot‑only “dark warehouses” are not the goal. Repetitive, monotone tasks are best automated, whereas humans remain essential for quality control, exception handling, process improvement and overseeing complex operations. The balance between high‑tech robot fleets and skilled staff is seen as the optimal path for scalable, resilient fulfillment centres.
